## Re-establish the evidence

Write down what has actually happened since treatment. A captured live specimen, fresh spotting in a previously mapped harbourage or a positive monitor is different from an isolated skin mark. Preserve specimens and photograph the location before cleaning.

## Compare the evidence with the scope

Read the service paperwork. Which rooms and furniture were included? Which method and products were used? What preparation was required? When was follow-up due? What does the warranty require the occupant to do?

Evidence just outside a narrow treatment boundary may point to scope. Evidence inside a treated frame may point to access, method or follow-up. The provider should inspect before offering the same unspecific work again.

## Common explanations to investigate

**Misidentification:** the original problem may not have been bed bugs.

**Hidden harbourages:** frames, connected furniture or room-edge gaps may not have been reached.

**Resistance:** the NHS notes that some bed bugs may resist certain insecticides.

**Preparation or access:** sealed piles, moved belongings or inaccessible areas can undermine the planned process.

**Reintroduction:** luggage, visitors, second-hand items or a connected untreated location may introduce new activity.

**Insufficient follow-up:** a programme that required return work may have been treated as a one-off visit.

## Avoid contaminating the investigation

Do not apply multiple new products before reassessment. They can affect monitoring, expose occupants and make it harder to understand what failed. Do not move to another sleeping room without discussing the consequence for distribution.

## Escalate with a clear record

Contact the provider in writing with dates, photographs and locations. Ask for the warranty or complaints route. If the explanation or response is inadequate, obtain a second written assessment that identifies evidence and proposes a distinct corrective scope.
