Council pest control

Glasgow City Council

The pest control page covers mice, rats and chargeable wasp nests (£116.50 including VAT) and does not mention bed bugs. A separate public health page says environmental health can deal with infestations of bed bugs or cockroaches, but it states no charge.

What Glasgow City Council says about bed bugs

Glasgow City Council runs a pest control service for homes. We checked its pest control page in October 2026. The page covers mice and rats at domestic properties. It also offers a paid service for live wasp nests, at £116.50 including VAT. The page does not mention bed bugs.

However, a second council page does. The public health page says environmental health can deal with nuisances such as infestations of bed bugs or cockroaches. That page states no charge and no booking steps for bed bugs. Because of that, ask the council to confirm what it will do for your home before you rely on it.

If the council cannot help, private treatment is the usual route. You can also use the GOV.UK pest control page to find your own council by postcode and compare it with what Glasgow says.

What to do first

Confirm the problem before you spend money. Look for live bugs, tiny dark spots and shed skins along mattress seams. Our guide on how to check your bed for bed bugs shows a simple step by step check. Many bites look like other insect bites, so a check of the bed matters.

Then limit the spread. Wash bedding hot and bag clothes you do not need. Do not move to another room to sleep, because bed bugs follow you. Our bed bug help hub explains each stage in plain English.

Renting in Glasgow

Many Glasgow households rent, so the landlord question comes up often. Shelter Scotland says a private landlord must deal with pests that come from repair problems. It also says tenants should report repairs as soon as they notice them. Read our guide to landlord responsibilities for bed bugs for the UK wide picture.

Put your report to the landlord or agent in writing. Keep the date and any photos. If they do not act, Shelter Scotland says the council’s environmental health team can help. It adds that there may be a charge for the work the council does. For general rights, see the Scottish Government page on private renting.

If treatment does not work

Some homes need more than one visit, so do not panic after the first treatment. However, if bugs return after the agreed visits, ask your pest controller what went wrong. Our guide on what to do when treatment is not working lists the usual causes. For example, missed hiding places and skipped preparation are common reasons.

Choosing a private pest controller

Ask for an inspection, a written quote and a clear plan. Price alone is a poor guide, because a fair plan explains the method and the number of visits. Our guide to choosing a pest controller lists what to ask. Our guide to mattress encasements explains how covers can help after treatment.

Keeping a record

Good records make every conversation easier. Note the date you first saw bugs, where you found them and which bedrooms are affected. Take clear photos with a coin beside the bug for scale. Therefore, when you contact the council or your landlord, you can show facts instead of describing a feeling.

Keep copies of every message, too. If the council or landlord replies, save the reply with the date. Because treatment often needs several visits, a simple log also shows what has been done and what is still outstanding. It helps a pest controller plan the next step.

When to ask for help

If you are unsure where to start, you can request help with bed bugs. We are an information and referral site, not a contractor. We do not treat homes ourselves, and we do not promise prices or response times.
