Council pest control

Belfast City Council

The council says it is currently only providing appointments for rats and mice inside a property and rats outdoors. It lists wasps, hornets, bees, fleas, flies and pigeons as not treated. Bed bugs are not listed, and the page points to private pest control services.

What Belfast City Council says about bed bugs

Belfast City Council runs a pest control service. We checked its pest control page in October 2026. The page says the council is currently only providing appointments for rats and mice inside a property. It also books one visit for rats outdoors. It lists wasps, hornets, bees, fleas, flies and wild pigeons as pests it does not treat.

Bed bugs are not on that list. The page gives no bed bug treatment, price or booking route. Nidirect’s page on council pest control says the same about Belfast, that appointments cover rats and mice only. Plan for private treatment, and check the council page again later because the wording says “currently”.

Finding a private pest controller

The council page points residents to two trade bodies. They are the British Pest Control Association and the National Pest Technicians’ Association. Both list member firms, so start there.

Then ask for an inspection and a written quote. Price alone is a poor guide, because a fair plan explains the method and the number of visits. Our bed bug treatment overview compares heat, chemical and other options. Our guide to bed bug heat treatment explains what to ask about heat.

What to do first

Confirm the problem first. Look for live bugs, small dark spots and shed skins along mattress seams. Many bites look like flea bites, so check carefully. Our guide on bed bugs versus fleas explains the signs that tell them apart. Because the council does not treat fleas either, you need to know which pest you have.

Then limit the spread. Wash bedding hot, bag clothes you do not need and avoid moving between rooms to sleep. Our bed bug help hub covers each step.

Pets and travel

Many households worry about animals. If you have a dog or cat, read our guide to bed bugs and pets. It explains how bed bugs affect pets and how to protect them during treatment.

Belfast also has many visitors. If you stayed in a hotel before the bites began, see our guide to bed bugs in hotels. It explains what to report and how to protect your luggage. For example, keep bags off the bed and inspect them before you bring them indoors.

Renting in Belfast

Northern Ireland has its own rules for tenants. Nidirect says that if the tenancy terms are not clear, the landlord is responsible for the interior of the property and its fixtures. It also says tenants must take proper care of the property and allow access for repairs. For other repairs, it says responsibility depends on what landlord and tenant agree.

If you rent, tell your landlord or agent in writing. Keep the date and any photos. Because bed bugs are not a clear repair item, ask the council for advice if the landlord does not act. Do not rely on guidance written for England.

Nearby help

Other councils answer differently. You can read about council pest control in Glasgow, where the public health page mentions bed bugs. For a city in England, see bed bug help in Liverpool.

Keeping a record

Good records make every conversation easier. Note the date you first saw bugs, where you found them and which rooms are affected. Take clear photos with a coin beside the bug for scale. Therefore, when you contact your landlord or a private firm, you can show facts instead of describing a feeling.

Keep copies of every message as well. If your landlord replies, save the reply with the date. Because treatment often needs several visits, a simple log shows what has been done and what is still outstanding. It also helps a pest controller plan the next step, so the work moves faster.

When to ask for help

If you are unsure what to do next, you can request help with bed bugs. We are an information and referral site, not a contractor. We do not treat homes ourselves, and we do not promise prices or response times. You can also find your council by postcode on the GOV.UK pest control page.
